Butte Federal Credit Union's History
Butte Federal Credit Union was founded in 1935 as
the first Grange Credit Union organized. Mr. Frank Parker,
Officer of the Land Bank of Chico, California realized
he could not help many of the people who came to him
for loans. Due to the small size of loan requests and/or
the impracticality of encumbering their property, Mr.
Parker gathered together a few fellow Grange members
to form a Credit Union “to make more available
credit for provident purposes”. On October 14,
1935 the Butte Pomona Credit Union was chartered by
the Federal Credit Union System. The name was changed
the next year to Butte Grange Federal Credit Union,
and then in 1989 again changed to our current name Butte
Federal Credit Union.
The scope and area of our field of membership has changed
over the years. In 1973 we added the Colusa County Grangers,
followed in 1983 with Lake, Glenn, Sutter, Lassen and
Tehama. In 1989 the WP Oroville Employees FCU merged
with us. This expanded our Credit Union outside of the
Grange system, now allowing our Credit Union to serve
railroad employees in the western states. Del Norte
and Humboldt Grangers were added in 1990 with Contra
Costa County Grangers coming on board in 1994. In 1995
the Yuba Sierra Grange Credit Union merged with us,
adding Grangers from Yuba and Sierra Counties. In 2000,
we added the Grangers from Placer and Nevada Counties.
In 2005 Diamond Gardner FCU merged with us, further
expanding our membership into Tehama County. In 2007,
the Butte County Postal Employees Credit Union, serving
Postal and Federal workers in the surrounding area,
merged with us, adding an additional 1100 members and
a new Chico Branch Office for us.
During the 1990’s we expanded our field of membership
by adding over 150 Small Employee Groups (SEG’s).
Some local companies include the Biggs-Gridley Memorial
Hospital, Oroville Hospital, Roplast Industries, Butte
County Employees Association, Nordic Industries, US
Postal Distribution Center of Marysville, Biggs Unified
School District, and Eastern Plumas District Hospital.
In early 2000 we opened our field of membership to include
any person who lives, works, worships, attends school
or volunteers in Southern Butte County, including the
cities of Oroville, Gridley, Biggs as well as all of
Yuba County.
In 2003 we again expanded our field of membership.
Any person who lives, works, worships, attends school
or volunteers in Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Plumas, Sutter,
Tehama or Yuba County is now eligible to join our Credit
Union. With four branch offices located in three counties,
we are able to offer our Credit Union services to thousands
of individuals.
At Butte Federal Credit Union it is our mission to
provide, with prudence, that spectrum of authorized
financial services which best meets the needs of our
membership and at all times, adhere to the basic philosophy
of the Credit Union movement. "People Helping People"
-- that's what we are all about at Butte Federal Credit
Union.
We look forward to welcoming you to our Credit Union
and to serving all of your financial needs. |
